What is uterine artery embolization (UAE)?

Uterine artery embolization, also called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), was initially used in the 1970s and was subsequently approved in 1995 as a safe and acceptable method for treating uterine fibroids.
By significantly reducing the fibroids’ blood supply, the intended result is shrinkage of the growths. A key benefit of the procedure, outside of its potential to alleviate abnormal bleeding, is that it leaves the uterus
intact. If you have heard about UAE and think it may be an option worth considering, you will first want to fully discuss the procedure with your healthcare provider to find out if you would be a good candidate. There are numerous reasons some women are not considered for the procedure, as discussed in the following BlogPosts.
