What is the average age for hysterectomy? Does region play a role in hysterectomy?

Naturally, age varies among women undergoing hysterectomies each year in the United States, but government data show that approximately 55% of those who have the procedure are between 35 and 49 years of age.Within that group, women between the ages of 40 and 45 years are most likely to have the operation. Age has a strong relationship to hysterectomy because of the types of medical
conditions that are most likely to occur during specific points in a woman’s reproductive life.
For example, smaller proportions of women who undergo the procedure are older than 55 or younger than 30 years of age.Women in their mid-50s and older are more likely than younger women to have the surgery for some form of reproductive tract cancer, which may include ovarian, cervical, or uterine cancer.
Geographic region is an additional factor underlying the surgery’s prevalence. For example, CDC statistics indicate that women who live in the South not only are more likely to undergo a hysterectomy than women who live in other parts of the country, they usually are
younger than women elsewhere when they have the procedure. Hysterectomy rates are lowest on the West Coast and in the Northeast, particularly in New York, which has the lowest rate of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The average age of Southern women at the time of surgery is 41.6 years compared with 47.7
years for women in other parts of the country. Of course, there are no hard and fast rules regarding age and region. A woman living in California is as likely to undergo a hysterectomy at 35 years of age as is one living in Georgia, depending on each individual’s diagnosis,
symptoms, degree of discomfort, and personal choice. However, of the top 10 states reporting the highest rates of the operation, 7 are located in the Southeast.
