What are the advantages of UAE?
First, UAE is regarded as an outpatient procedure, meaning the patient usually goes home after the procedure. Hospitalization, when needed, is usually for pain control only, and usually lasts about 24 hours.
The recovery period is much shorter than with the usual surgical treatment for fibroids. The patient is generally able to resume normal activities and return to work in about 7 to 10 days. (Surgery usually has a 4 to 6 week recovery time.)
The risk of significant complications after UAE is much less than with a myomectomy or hysterectomy. UAE is generally regarded as the safest therapeutic option available to appropriate candidates.
What are the Disadvantages / contraindications or limitations of UAE?
Pregnant females or those planning to become pregnant are not candidates for UAE.Women with cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovary should not have this procedure. Undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding is a definite contraindication to UAE, as this may be a symptom of an undiagnosed cancer.
Patients with fibroids that are 20-weeks’ size or greater are not good candidates for UAE. The reduction in size of such large fibroids still leaves a significant bulk after treatment.
