How may fibroids affect the baby during pregnancy?

The following list describes how fibroids relate to a few of the more common pregnancy complications:

  • Preterm delivery has been shown by several studies to be the leading cause of newborn problems (neonatal morbidity) in pregnancies complicated by uterine fibroids. Preterm delivery may be caused, in part, by an increased incidence of pain in pregnant patients with fibroids.
  • Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) has not been shown to be a significant problem in pregnancies with fibroids.
  • Malposition of the baby is a risk for some pregnant women with fibroids. Specifically, multiple or large fibroids seem to be related to an increase in breeches and/or transverse positions of the baby in the uterus. It is thought that this risk may be due to the fibroids impinging on the space needed for the normal growth and movement of the fetus.
  • Placental abruption (premature separation of the placenta) rarely occurs in pregnancies with fibroids, although some studies suggest that patients with fibroids may be at a higher risk for placental abruption.
