Are any other medications available for treating fibroids?

A class of antiestrogen and antiprogesterone medications, such as RU-486 (mifepristone), has been used on an experimental basis with promising results. It is presently felt that additional studies are needed before these drugs can be recommended.

If pain, especially during the menstrual period, is the only symptom, over-the-counter pain medication or prescription drugs have been found to be helpful.

With heavy bleeding as the chief symptom, oral contraceptives (e.g., birth control pills), the birth control injection (Depo-Provera), the patch, or the progesterone containing intrauterine device (IUD) may be useful.
